At Friars Walk Dental Practice we do CEREC – I hear you ask what is CEREC and what can it do for me? It is a 3D system that lets us make porcelain crowns and inlays all in one visit. We have now been using CEREC for many years and love it more than ever.
CEREC is an in-surgery computer system that allows us to replace damaged or missing tooth structure with a ceramic material that’s as close to a natural tooth as is possible. This is done while you are in the practice – in just one visit. All ceramic porcelain inlays/onlays veneers and crowns that look and feel like natural teeth can be made and fitted in a single appointment, usually in about an hour.
So what is the procedure? We scan the opposite teeth and the way the teeth bite together first. We remove the old filling, and decay and any thin weak tooth material and scan the prepared tooth.
After this we stop working in the mouth and start working on the computer. Everybody enjoys seeing the pictures of their teeth and the designing of their new tooth. We make 3D design and this information is sent to the milling unit.
Everyone asks if this is like 3D printing and yes it is – but the tooth isn’t built up layer by layer, it is cut back from a block in the machine, which is much stronger. The block is then precisely carved to produce your new restoration, which is fantastic.
Finally, the custom made CEREC restoration ‘bonded’ seamlessly into the tooth, strengthening and sealing it at the same time and then we tidy up! We have to make sure that you can bite properly, that its smooth and that you can floss. –And all in about ah hour!
What are the benefits of CEREC
- Everything is carried out in a single visit – you only need to visit the dentist once – take one day away from your work or life to have the procedure – instead of the usual two or three visits.
- Only one set of local anaesthetic injections – since the entire procedure can be carried out within an hour you only need to have one lot of injections
- Your dentist is in complete control of the final result – since the crown or inlay is deigned and fabricated from start to finish by your dentist, he has total control over how it will look and fit.
- No temporary restorations – which can often fall off between appointments if they are not looked after properly.
