Why So Many People Have Dental Implants

Losing teeth can happen at any stage in a person’s life, for a long list of reasons, one of which is gum disease. That said, many people find it difficult to sort out how to replace what they have lost, and not realising what is the best long-term solution for them.

Dental implants serve as a complete tooth replacement. The most common material for these implants is titanium, a bio-inert material, that provides a reliable foundation for your teeth. The fact that this material is bio-inert means that your jaw bone should recognise it as bone, reducing the chances of infection after implantation.

Reasons to consider dental implants

Dental implants have been a viable option for millions of people around the world, and many different scenarios may call for one.

  1. Stop your teeth from shifting into the empty space – When you lose a tooth, the surrounding teeth will eventually begin moving to fill in the space causing a number of dental complications.
  2. Conserve your jawbone – If you choose to place a fixed bridge instead of getting a dental implant, your jawbone will eventually begin to deteriorate underneath the missing tooth
  3. Implant-supported dentures – Many people complain of a wide variety of complications with their dentures. Poor fit, sores in their mouths, sunken lips, and food restrictions.
  4. Preserve your appearance – When your jawbone begins to deteriorate because of missing teeth, it often causes your face to appear sunken in

No More Missing Teeth

A complete set of teeth can make a huge difference in more than one way. Humans use their teeth to create important sounds during speech, grind, crush and tear food, and to wordlessly convey emotions. Without a complete smile, you may develop a lisp, or your self-esteem might suffer. In addition, your ability to eat hard foods may be reduced, depending on the teeth you lost, but dental implants can help you regain function.

One of the biggest reasons people choose implants over dentures is the fact that they are permanent. Dentures irritate the gums and slide around after hours of use, and you have to take them out of your mouth to ensure they get clean enough. Dental Implants are a permanent fixture in the mouth, take very little maintenance and look like your natural teeth too.

Implants look, feel, and function exactly the same way your natural teeth do.  They help you chew food into small enough pieces to digest but not only that, they are an important part of your smile and thus, your self-confidence. Imagine being able to smile without being conscious of missing or broken teeth.

So why wouldn’t you choose dental implants? – if you have missing teeth and would like to find out more please CALL 01582 663838

Dental Veneers

Ever wondered why the celebs have perfect teeth? Most of them were not born with them!

When the celebs hit fame they always have a smile makeover, from whitening, straightening, veneers it goes on… They want to have that perfect natural smile!

Good news is you can too, here at Friars Walk In Dunstable we have treated so many clients and we have to say look amazing! Just Saying!

What Are Dental Veneers?

A cosmetic veneer is a thin shell fitted securely to the front surface of a tooth to conceal defects. Veneers are usually made from ceramic, porcelain or a composite material, and are a minimally invasive way to enhance your smile.

You may have discoloured, misshapen or even damaged teeth, or would like to conceal gaps.

What Is The Process To Have Dental Veneers?

A very thin layer of enamel is removed; this is so the veneer will fit in with your teeth. Impressions will be taken, so a veneer can be produced just for you. Finally the veneer will be bonded to the tooth with a strong dental adhesive.

 What Is the aftercare?

Porcelain veneers are very strong and should not break under normal circumstances.  They can brake, as can a natural tooth, if subject to trauma. If gum shrinkage (recession) occurs over time the root of the tooth may become exposed.  Patients may want a new veneers to cover the root.

Don’t Let Your Teeth Suffer! With The Flu virus

With the nasty flu strain that is doing the rounds thought to be reaching its peak, we obviously hope that our patients have and will manage to avoid it.

There is no doubt that the flu can make you feel very ill indeed, and many regular routines will go out of the window until you recover sufficiently from it should you be one of the unlucky ones to actually get it.

If you are unfortunate enough to become ill; however much you really don’t feel like doing so, it is important to continue to take good care of your teeth and gums. With your immune system compromised at times like this, problems such as gum disease are perhaps more likely.

Your Toothbrush

The flu virus is harbored in the mucus in your respiratory system, therefore it comes in contact with your teeth and mouth every day you are infected. When people get the flu, they don’t stop brushing their teeth, in fact if they are frequently vomiting they may be using their toothbrushes more than ever. Congestion can cause the nasal passages to become blocked and cause a person to snore while they sleep. The drying out of the mouth that accompanies snoring encourages the growth of bacteria and the formation of cavities. Further, vomiting brings stomach acid to the teeth, which erodes enamel and can spur the development of tooth decay.

Perhaps one of the most important things that you can do when you have a virus is to drink plenty of water. From an oral and general health point of view, staying well hydrated is very important. It will help to contribute to your saliva flow which removes much ‘nasty’ bacteria and food debris from the mouth. It also prevents your mouth from becoming dry. This is important as bacteria multiply much faster in a warm dry environment such as occurs when you have a dry mouth.

Eat healthily

A diet high in fruit and vegetables is ideal for providing the vitamins that help to fight off illnesses. Anyone who has had the flu though will know that this is unlikely to happen, and, when we feel like eating at all, we are probably more likely to reach for the biscuits and chocolate than anything healthy. Naturally, these ‘comfort foods’ will contain high sugar levels which are damaging for your teeth. Try to minimise these as much as you possibly can, or at least return to a healthy diet as soon as possible.

If you have had one of the more unpleasant viruses which can last for a week or two; we recommend that you see your dentist at the Friars Walk Dental Practice in Dunstable to make sure that your teeth and gums are still healthy. It is far better to intervene at an early stage than to leave it several months, until your usual appointment, before any possible treatment is carried out. If you are concerned, please call 0158 2638 908

Why Dental Implants are a long term solution for Missing Teeth

How long does a dental implant last?

Once the implant is fixed in position and as long as you maintain careful oral hygiene, you can expect the dental implant to last up to or even exceeding 40 years.

This is why Friars Walk Dental Practice in Dunstable highly recommends Dental Implants They continue to be in very high demand for a variety of reasons. Implants are very strong, stable and long-lived, as long as you take good care of them, plus Dental implants also have the highest success rate of any tooth-replacement option

What is a dental implant?

Put simply, a dental implant is a substitute for a natural tooth root. It is an artificial tooth root which is used to provide support for a new tooth. The implant not only fills an unsightly gap but helps to prevent bone loss in your jaw bone which so often takes place when a tooth or teeth have been lost. Because a dental implant is fixed into the bone it provides stability for both the new tooth and your set of teeth as a whole. It also helps to keep your normal face shape, which is great, as you get older.

Is a dental implant right for you?

You will know if you are a suitable recipient for a dental implant after you have attended an appointment with our Friars Walk dentist. We will perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums and will assess your bone density and the amount of available bone to accept an implant. You may have x-rays taken to determine these characteristics.

The process

At Friars Walk Dental , our implant surgeon, will be the one placing your dental implants. Fitting implants is a minor surgical procedure and can be carried out under local or general anaesthetic depending on the patient’s preference. Compared to other tooth replacement options, implants are osteoconductive. This means that over time, they will support the growth of the jaw bone and provide a firm anchor for your new teeth for better bone health.
